Local 2068 Calls For Scrapping EPCR

March 9, 2011

Chief Ronald L. Mastin

Fire Chief's Office

4100 Chain Bridge Road

Fairfax, Virginia 22030

Dear Chief Mastin:

The time has come for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department to
aggressively explore an alternative to our present electronic Patient Care
Report (ePCR) system. The present system increases time at hospitals, has
been unreliable, and actually hinders, rather than helps, patient care. Our
members are being asked to decrease our time at the hospitals but have been
given a system that causes them to prolong their stay. We are being held
accountable for doing reports with a faulty reporting system that many times
cannot even print.

Additionally, we understand the present Deputy Fire Chief and Battalion
Chief of EMS Administration inherited this debacle. Our organization is
respectfully requesting that they be given direction to leave this failed
effort and find something better.

Lastly, Local 2068's EMS Committee would like to extend an offer to meet
with you and applicable staff from your EMS Administration to discuss our
concerns further and to offer some solutions such as going to a system that
the state is currently using.

I look forward to your response.

Respectfully,

John R. Niemiec

President

While not a fan of the current EPCR if it effects patient care that is EMS Provider's Fault. Put the EPCR to the side and focus on your patient care, write the info you need on a pad of paper and transfer it to the EPCR at the hospital. Utilizing the EPCR should never be chosen over providing care for yout patient. Otherwise I agree with the rest of the letter.
