VA Task Force 1 Deployed to Japan

Good evening,

As part of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Office Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), the Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue Team, Virginia Task Force One (VATF-1) has been activated and deployed 74 personnel to include search and rescue canines, physicians, paramedics, structural engineers, technical search and rescue specialists, and other support personnel and approximately 30 tons of equipment. The team will be part of the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) responding to Japan to assist in the response to the earthquake and Tsunami. VATF-1 departed the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Training Academy this evening, Friday, March 11, 2011 at 10:30 PM on a flight to Misawa airport in Japan. The team will be traveling through Los Angeles, California enroute to Japan and we can expect that the deployment will take up to 2 weeks. Updates will periodically be provided.
