Amazing! Employees have been asked to go without raises for several years, and Fairfax County can afford to build a new public safety center, at a cost of $149 million! This is bull shit, and Local 2068 needs to tell the BOS that they will not allow employees to continue to take a hit financially, while they splurge on an unnecessary new public safety center.

I would say that the Massey needs to be destroyed, that building is a dump. I think what the real BS is that they can find money for a ton of other things but no raises for us after 3 years. This is just another example of what is more of a priority to them.
All they need is a pole barn, that way, they can put all the jack asses from massey in it.
I'm a bit surprised that you say 'bull...you probably haven't worked there but I have. If you have then you know about the heat and A/C problems, how about NO water? How about NO parking close to the building? (I'm not allowed in VIP spaces) A new Massey is money well spent, however, I also know they will "slide" other "offices" there that aren't needed...that is BS! Like new "offices" for Information Techno Geeks...while most worker bees will get "cubes", DIT (the gods)have already claimed at least 20 plush offices. Ask around, it's true! (Ohhh...that's right, it's a data center! They MUST have offices for that and NOT cubes...may this time they will get proper electricity and A/C specs)
Blah Blah Blah.....Good job Brother Big Eye! You have created a site where the dim wits can bitch and moan with no accountability to anyone all the while screaming for those above them to do the right thing. You’re a real public servant Big eye.....
those above us aren't holding themselves accountable either...
Agree with 948 Anonymous...
The sense of entitlement here by Big Eye and select others is almost embaressing. True, no raises for 3 years...OK, been there, done that in 1990 and 1991. Let me tell you, the vast majority of EVERYONE in this County has not endured that! So, if I feel fortunate to have a good job and realize the Massey building is a decripit POS, then the rest of you shouldn't have a GD thing to bitch about. That place is a disaster with heat and cooling, not to mention it is filled with asbestos. (hey, that's a cancer causing agent in case you didn't know) It is currently not friable, (as far as we know) but does that mean it's ok? HECK NO!
If your point Big Eye is to sell papers (or in your case I don't exactly know what it is), then you are worrying about something else that is nothing more than way off base... The new PS building will be there LONG after you and your blog are 6 feet under. It will serve the future of all employees and the citizens of this County... btw, that's why we have jobs... I think that gets lost in the bitching and complaining many times.
Hey, I should understand all this. After all I was appointed the first County Executive in 1952. How many of you knew that? Or they broke ground in 1967 and opened for business in 1969... anyone? anyone? Bueller ..
It was nice they named the building after me but it is time to provide a safe environment for all those in the existing building.
The needs of the many are greater than the needs of the few.
Be lucky you have a job!... Now quit the bitching so I can go back to sleep.
I wanted to take a moment and say although I disagree about the position you take regarding the FRD, I fully support the freedom of speech and the utilization of the uncharted waters of BLOGS, but I would be concerned of the legal ramifications if any.
It’s obvious from the numerous postings, you have allowed frivolous, speculative, half truths and yes at times accurate information.
Quite frankly each and every one of you who claim to be “Brother Big Eye” and I assume at some point wore and are still wearing the uniform do nothing to foster the good things our FRD has and continue to accomplish.
The circular postings by a limited few who may have an ax to grind with management, and the personal attacks don’t do your BLOG any justice, nor does it lend it any credence. The truth be known, the staff of The Big Eye is just as guiltily of perpetuating the hostile work environment as those that have been blogged about.
It is my humble opinion you need to perhaps do a little leg work yourself before you let those who post take a shotgun approach to a topic to see where it leads. There is a difference between the truth and ones personal agenda and although you have your disclaimer, the responsibility still rests with you.
You are the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Your quote of “We are not who you think we are” is absolutely correct. You’ve done an admirable job of keeping that from the public and the young members who thrive on misinformation.
Thanks for the opportunity to post
Let's talk about "entitlement". Its really hard to believe that there are some people who feel that they are entitled to a new Taj Mahal public safety center in the worst recession this country has seen since the great depression. Its not just that we haven't seen a raise in three years. How are we going to explain this to the taxpayers in Fairfax County who have been laid off or otherwise have a difficult time making ends meet? Its really embarrassing to think that the county can spend that kind of money right now.
The Massy Building didn't fall apart overnight, and can certainly be used a few more years until the economy is better.
Brother Big Eye
We have replacement cycles for our rolling stock apparatus. When these units are close to or are at the end of their life cycle, the FRD orders new. The Massey Building has reached the end of its life cycle. With the numerous issues with that building and given the fact that the County will not put any funds into fixing major systems the only option was to relocate.
Take the time to get educated and understand how the money/procurement system works and the timeline associated with such funding.
Maybe if we tried a little transparency, starting at the top, we could give the big eye a little bit less to talk about. Try it, I dare ya :)
This is the score how I see it:
Posters: 6
Big Eye: Goose Egg
Sorry Big Eye, I agree... you are way off base again...
Maybe YOU feel "entitled" ?
BRING IT!
To Fredrick Martin Baron:
I am very curious to see what the subpoena (that your referenced) is for, as in, what is the violation/law infraction/basis, etc.
Whats interesting is the name your using is for a dead lawyer (identity violation?? - http://dembot.com/post/57248104/frederick-martin-baron-1947-2008)
Also, where is the subpoena filed?
My guess is that we will not hear from you anymore, because your a coward and a fake.
I for one truly enjoy this site because its informative, and it causes discussion (which is typically left unended or danced around in various meetings or from falseface interest groups. The rank and file love it because they have the opportunity to make an informed decision, without bias or prejudice.
You, however, have a choice. To go visit another site that is more on your level.
Please, respond to my questions!!
I understand the outrage but am sad at the ignorance of a basic governmental process.
The Public Safety/Information Center complex will be funded by bonds issued by the county.
Before the bonds can be issued it requires APPROVAL by citizens when they vote on a referendum at a regular or special election.
If the voters say no to taking on this obligation, the bonds cannot be issued.
The true expense of a Capital Improvement Program project is the cost of construction + the cost of borrowing money.
The obsession that the board of supervisors have with the county's AAA rating is because any degradation of our rating exponentially increases the expense of borrowing money through the bond process.
Salaries, supplies, and equipment under a certain dollar value or lifespan is covered in the Operating Budget, called the General Fund in the FY 2012 Advertised Budget
Real estate, personal property and sales tax are General Fund revenues. Also fees-for-service like ambulance billing and fire prevention inspections/testing.
Not moving forward on replacing Massey will not improve the chances for a pay raise.
Marcus Aurelius 26 April 121 – 17 March 180. Hmmmm your not doing so bad either, and you quote identity violations?
Mike:
How are you doing in retirement?... Hope all is well for you!... Amazing how ignorance over basic infrastructure replacement is simply not understood isn't it? That is a basic requirement for "government" in general. i.e., roads, bridges, BUILDINGS. Some of these people that can't figure this out are still "pulling an 1" 1/2" hoseline as well.
Thanks your the educated response and explanation of the process. Hopefully it will help some of the Java men here, but I have my reservations.
Now if you will excuse me, I have several hundred people trapped on the 135th story of a high rise fire and I need to get going.
Any ideas???
That movie is 37 years old..time for a remake with an alternate ending don't you think?
Cast:
BigEye 401 as his/her self
Gilbert Gottfried as S.F. Battalion 5 (unfortunately Steve McQueen is no longer with us and hey..we're on a tight budget here and we loved him as the Aflac Duck)
BigEye 401 to SF BC-5:
10-92 K? Return 10-76 assignment.
BC5 - AFLAC!..WOOPS..I Mean "K"
In case some of you missed the "FDNY wanna be" drill:

ps. - the HVAC, elevators, bathrooms etc sucked in the Massey Bldg when I worked there years ago. About time they make some improvements. Also, thank you to "FossilMedic" for providing some valid, accurate information. I have always thought had he made Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief etc, the department would have turned out a bit better than it has.
The building is falling apart. 2 to 3 floors of bathrooms not working. Water fountains dont work. Cant turn off or access lights to replace them because partition walls block them. power fluctuations and outages that blow your computer in the middle of work, then people getting stuck in the elevator at the same time. parking lots to small for the vehicles to fit in. It needs to go. This new building will not serve only the fire department but the police department as well.
Station 4 still functions we shouldnt replace that either, and station 10 is still running calls so hell with that as well.
And while we are at it trying to save money, why dont we remove the laundry machines so that you cant do your families personal laundry at the fire house, and no more caring for and washing your car on the county time, or you forfiet your hours salary. And everytime you sit down at the computer to catch up on your blogs or emails that are not productive to the fire service you should be docked $1.00 a minute from your salary.
its a damn buidling that will house and operate the other side of the department that needs to exist in order for the department to function. its not like it is a storage shed for extra gear or reserve units.
